WHAT IS EQUINE-ASSISTED MENTAL HEALTH? (EAMH)

We all have stories, horses included, and our stories are what make us who we are.  As we uncover the many layers that contribute to where we've come from, what we've experienced, and who we are today, we become able to better control and choose who we want to be in the future.  For many children across the U.S. who don’t have the privilege of growing up in relative homes, their feelings of belonging and connectedness to family and their deeper sense of self that comes from familial bonds, storytelling, and shared experiences, becomes fractured and ultimately can impair their ability to form healthy, meaningful relationships later in life.  For that reason, creating relationship is at the core of EAMH at Stable Connections. In EAMH, clients work with specially trained horses, each with their own stories around trauma, adoption, and recovery.  Each of the horses has different personalities, needs, life stories, and quirks that make them relatable and powerful healers. The experiential nature of equine-assisted mental health provides clients the opportunity to experience connection without needing control. These skills can then be transferred to human connection and engagement as clients are able to uncover solutions within themselves that allow them to resolve and heal their relationships with others.  Equine-assisted mental health encompasses a range of modalities that involve activities with horses to enhance physical and mental health. Modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma Focused Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, Experiential Therapy, etc. are utilized with horses as a supplemental component to support a client in working on their treatment goals.   Through various games and activities, clients have the opportunity to establish relationships, project, create metaphors, and resolve their internal conflicts in a safe, FUN, and nonjudgmental environment.

OUR MISSION

One of the strongest underpinnings to who we become as people throughout our lifespan is rooted in the relationships we form with others.  Relationship is central to everything we do.

At Stable Connection, our mission is to engage a mutual relationship between horses and humans to enhance and evoke positive change in the lives of high-risk individuals and their families. This is accomplished through various services including equine-assisted psychotherapy, sibling and parent/caregiver programs, and psychoeducation.

Through personalized treatment planning, individualized approaches, and safety planning, clients are able to create healing connections, repair strained relationships, problem solve, and learn more about themselves and others.

We serve individuals who are or have been in the foster care systemm, are adopted, have experienced trauma, learning and developmental differences, anxiety, depression, ASD, ADHD, attachment challenges, etc.

OUR VALUES

Trauma-Informed Care: Trauma informed care includes safety, choice, collaboration, trustworthiness and empowerment. Ensuring that the physical and emotional safety of an individual and the horse is crucial for building trusting relationships and creating nurturing environments.

Collaborative Problem Solving: CPS believes that kids with challenging behaviors are already trying hard. CPS helps adults shift to a more accurate and compassionate mindset and embrace the truth that kids do well if they can – rather than the more common belief that kids would do well if they simply wanted to.

Safety Planning: Safety planning is about brainstorming ways to stay safe that may also help reduce the risk of future harm. It can include psychoeducation around trauma, triggers, and de-escalation interventions, planning for a future crisis, considering your options, and making decisions about your next steps. Finding ways to stay and feel safer can be an important step towards healing.

KRISTIE THUDIUM

Child and Family Therapist, M.S.Ed., QMHP, EAMHP

Kristie completed her bachelor of science in Clinical Psychology with a dual minor in Sociology and Communications from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania.  During her undergraduate work, she became passionate about research.  She co-authored the book, "The Transitory Nature of Parent, Sibling, and Romantic Partner Relationships in Emerging Adulthood".  She received presidential honors including a Silver medal for the Chamblis Awards for work in original writing in literature, meritorious writing in other fields, and successfully completed research projects.  She co-authored two other works: “Cross Cultural Variations in Parenting Challenges” and “A Qualitative Examination of Dating Partnerships in Emerging Adulthood". In 2014 she was selected to provide the commencement address at the university's commencement ceremony. Kristie went on to complete her master's degree at the University of Pennsylvania in Applied Psychology with a focus on the Interdisciplinary Studies of Human Development.  While at Upenn, she worked in an emergency housing shelter for women and children experiencing interpersonal violence in Philadelphia, PA and Penn Child Research Center.  After graduating she went on to become a licensed Behavioral Specialist. Kristie started working with horses when she was 8 years old and horses remained a part of her life over the years.  In 2017, Kristie was working with a child that noticed similarities between the horse's injuries and some of her own challenges.  Kristie became interested in the idea of merging horses and therapy as a way of fostering healing within an experiential setting and began exploring what resources were available in the community.  She created a research study called Stable Connection which looked at the effectiveness of equine-assisted interventions in sibling dyads.  This kick started her goals of creating a nonprofit aimed towards the inclusion of horses in therapeutic settings. She went on to become a certified Equine-Assisted Mental Health Practitioner (EAMHP) through the University of Denver's Institute for Human-Animal Connection. Since moving to Oregon she has worked as a mental health crisis responder as a Family Intervention Specialist and a Child and Family Therapist.  Recently she helped kick start a therapeutic pilot program with the Department of Human Services (DHS) for youth in foster care. Kristie is a certified crisis intervention specialist and in 2019 completed the Foster and Adoptive Certification Program through Portland State University.  Kristie is honored to have the opportunity to walk alongside youth and their families during times of crisis and to bare witness to the healing that stories, nature, and animals can bring.

Stable Connection: Enhancing Sibling Relationships through Equine-Assisted Therapy

Presented at the Association for Psychological Sciences in Chicago May 2022

The goal of the current study was to develop and test an equine-assisted therapy program to enhance sibling relationship quality in children and assisting parents in reacting to sibling fighting more effectively. Differences were found on sibling warmth and on parent involvement between the pre-test and post-test.
